Holiday Hosting Cleaning Checklist: Get Guest-Ready Before Thanksgiving
Hosting for the holidays is a lot of work before anyone even arrives. Between the menu, the shopping and the decorations, cleaning tends to get squeezed into the last frantic evening. It doesn’t have to. Spread across two weeks, getting the house guest-ready takes a little time each day, and you’ll still have energy left when the doorbell rings.
Here’s the countdown we suggest to Rogue Valley families getting ready for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s gatherings.
Two Weeks Out: Declutter and Make a Plan
Cleaning goes faster when there’s less stuff in the way. Start by clearing the surfaces guests will actually see and use.
- Walk the guest path. Go from the front door to the living room, the dining table, the guest bathroom and the guest bedroom. Those rooms get your attention first. Rooms with the doors closed can wait.
- Clear counters and tables. Box up mail, paperwork and everyday clutter so you have room for serving dishes and decorations.
- Make room in the coat closet. Guests need somewhere to put coats, especially in the wet months.
- Empty the refrigerator. Toss expired food and wipe the shelves so there’s room for the turkey, sides and leftovers.
- Book help early. If you plan to hire a cleaning company before the holidays, call now. Pre-holiday weeks fill up fast.
One Week Out: Deep Clean the Rooms Guests Use
Kitchen
The kitchen works harder during the holidays than at any other time of the year, so give it a head start.
- Clean the oven before you need it. A dirty oven smokes once you crank it up for a long roast.
- Degrease the stovetop, range hood and backsplash.
- Wipe cabinet fronts and handles, which get grimy from constant use.
- Run the dishwasher’s cleaning cycle and clear the filter.
- Check that serving platters, gravy boats and good glasses are clean and ready to use.
Guest Bathroom
- Scrub the toilet, tub and shower, including the grout lines.
- Clean the mirror, sink and faucet until they shine.
- Stock extra toilet paper, hand soap and clean hand towels where guests can find them without asking.
- Empty the trash can and add a liner.
Guest Bedroom
- Wash the sheets and blankets, even if the bed was made up months ago. Stored bedding picks up a musty smell.
- Dust the nightstands and dresser, and clear a drawer or some closet space.
- Vacuum under the bed.
Living and Dining Areas
- Dust from top to bottom: ceiling fans, light fixtures, shelves, then furniture.
- Vacuum upholstery and flip the couch cushions.
- Wash the windows guests will look out of. Low winter sun shows every streak.
Two to Three Days Out: The Floors and First Impressions
Save floors for close to the event so they stay clean.
- Vacuum and mop every floor in the guest path.
- Clean the entryway: wipe the front door, shake out the mat, and set out a boot tray if rain is in the forecast.
- Sweep the porch and front walk. If the walkway has gone green and slippery, clean it now rather than the morning of. Our pressure washing service can take care of driveways and walkways before the holiday rush.
The Day Before: Quick Resets Only
If the earlier steps are done, the day before is for touch-ups, not real cleaning.
- Wipe the guest bathroom sink and mirror one more time.
- Run the dishwasher and empty it so you start the day with an empty machine.
- Take out the trash and recycling.
- Do a final ten-minute pickup of the guest path.
During the Gathering: Keep It Manageable
A few habits keep the house from falling apart while guests are there.
- Clean as you cook. Load the dishwasher between courses so dishes don’t pile up.
- Put leftovers away promptly. The USDA recommends refrigerating leftovers within two hours of cooking. Clearing the table quickly also cuts down on cleanup later.
- Wipe high-touch surfaces. Holiday gatherings overlap with cold and flu season. The CDC recommends cleaning frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs, faucet handles and light switches.
- Treat spills right away. Blot wine and gravy from carpet and upholstery before they set. Grease is a special case, so see our guide to cleaning up turkey grease.
After the Holidays: Don’t Skip the Reset
Once guests leave, the house needs more than a quick tidy. Wash all guest linens and towels, clean the oven and stovetop again, mop the kitchen floor, vacuum the furniture, and check the carpets for spots you missed in the moment. Then start January with a plan. Our house cleaning schedule breaks the year into daily, weekly, monthly and seasonal tasks.
